Tory MP should resign, not hide behind PM

Re: Embattled Lukiwski enjoys PM's support following apology, April 8.

Saying "sorry" is not enough. There are, or at least there should be,consequences for one's actions: A Catholic priest caught abusing children, a church that turns a blind eye to abuse by its clergy, or a married man coming 'out of the closet' all have heavy debts to pay. The priest is jailed and sued, the church is sued and suffers ridicule, and  a gay married man suffers losses in his family and extended family.

Anything that devalues human life is not to be tolerated. So saying sorry just doesn't cut it without some concrete indication of either change or compensation.

Having "paid the price" for being a gay man, I will no longer accept a simple "I'm sorry" from anyone who, especially someone in public office, makes offensive and shameless remarks.

I am not surprised that Prime Minister Stephen Harper supports MP Tom Lukiwski. It would appear that these are the Conservatives' true colours. Otherwise, as suggested by New Democrat MP Bill Siksay, Mr. Harper and his government would implement policies that support gay and lesbian voters especially adding "gender identity and expression to the Canadian Human Rights Act."

If Mr. Lukiwski had any integrity at all, he would have stepped down and not have hidden behind his boss.
